1854 (Aug 27) entire to Baltimore, USA, with 1852-55 blued paper (2d) greyish slate vertical bisect with sheet margin at right, very neatly tied by "1" barred numeral with crisp "PAID / AT / BARBADOES" crowned circle adjacent, ms "1/" to pay the packet rate as well as New York Ship 7cts ds, reverse with embossed seal of the Peru Consulate in Barbados along with code "1" cds despatch, Barbadoes double arc ds, Kingston (Jamaica) and St. Thomas transits, one of only four known bisects to the USA according to Peter Ford with this marginal example the finest of its kind; cert. Holcombe (1984). Note: The bisects of the 2d stamps were only authorised between 4th August 1854 and 21st September 1854. (Image)

1858 (Apr 28) envelope to England with 1855-58 white paper (1d) pale blue (just cut into at top left corner otherwise fine to large margins) tied by crisp "1" barred oval paying the internal rate, with ms "6" and "PAID / AT / BARBADOES" crowned circle adjacent to pay the 6d packet rate, London transit below, reverse with code "1" cds despatch, Barbadoes double arc ds and Stockport arrival, a fine and attractive franking, one of only four such combinations to the UK according to Peter Ford, this being the finest strike of the crowned circle and the latest recorded to the UK; ex Hackmey (DFSA 1986, "a very pretty cover"). 1860 (Jun 19) envelope from Bridgetown to British Guiana, with 1852-55 (4d) brownish red pair (close to large margins) and 1858 1d pale blue pin perf. pair (trimmed from the sheet, clear margins), tied by "1" barred numerals, paying 10d double rate (2d for the Colony and 8d for the Packet) and rated "2" on arrival, reverse with Barbadoes double arc despatch and Demerara arrival cds, this bearing one of only two covers recorded bearing a multiple of the 1855 (4d) (the other from the same correspondence with the same franking), a major Barbados rarity showing the largest known multiple of the highest values of the first issue; cert. RPS (1964); ex Leslie Wheeler and Joseph Hackmey (this cover featuring on the front cover of the David Feldman April 1986 catalogue). (Image)

1868 (May 26) Officers' concessionary envelope sent from Bridgetown to England, endorsed at to "Officers' letter / from W. W. W. Poole / Staff Surgeon Major" and "Treasury Warrant Sept 27th 1867" (denoting the document authorising the concession), countersigned by the commanding officer at left, and franked with 1861-70 Britannia 6d bright orange tied by oval "1" numeral, reverse with despatch and Chatham arrival cds, roughly torn open and slightly reduced at left, some minor toning, a very rare officer's letter, with the few known all coming from the Mrs Poole correspondence, with this being the only example with the Treasury Warrant endorsement. Note: Soldiers and sailors serving in Barbados were privileged to send letters to England for 1d, with Officers having to pay 6d and the normal rate for letters to 1/2oz being 1s. (Image)
