Australian States: Queensland, 1887, 1d vermilion red. Tied by "London, No 6, 09" cds canceled upon arrival in Boston, England, on soldier's letter endorsed "From J.E.Young, S.G.T. HMS Swinger, Brisbane, Australia" at top and countersigned by commanding officer "Lt. T.A. Hodge", reverse with "Boston, No 17, 90" receiving cds, Very Fine, a very scarce unexcised postage usage on soldier's letter from Australia. SG No. 179; Estimate $500 - 750.

Bold strike of lion and crown double circle handstamp on 1839 folded letter to Oatlands, Van Diemensland with "10d" rating, letter from South Australia pioneer Robert Gouger datelined "16 July, 1839" with content including the increasing value of his Adelaide town acres…I have 17 town acres, and two of them for which I gave originally about £18 - are now worth £3,000…The society is excellent, the Governor is an accomplished scholar and a gentlemen…Pray excuse my hurry to save the post; cover with central tear at top, Very Fine, letter carried by the ship "Emma" and is one of the earliest known South Australia covers to Tasmania, ex-John Bell. Estimate; $1,500 - 2,000.

Both with large margins all round, tied by neat barred "52" in oval handstamps on 1864 registered cover from Ross to Secunderabad, India, straight line "Registered" handstamp at center and red "Post Office, Launceston, Sp 23, 1864" date stamp additionally tying left stamp, reverse red Bombay transit and "Secunderabad, Oc 24, 1864" receiving backstamps; central cover opening tear at top and portions of backflaps missing yet only slightly affecting receiving postmark, still Very Fine, a choice franking and rare cover to this unusual destination, ex-Prof. E. Clear to large margins, tied by "19 V" barred oval handstamps on fresh oversized folded letter sheet to the Paymaster of Police in Melbourne prepaying the quadruple inland letter rate (6d per ½oz.), with manuscript "O.H.M.S." endorsement at top, reverse with "Hamilton, Victoria, My 5, 1855" origin date stamp and receiving date stamp, Very Fine and choice, this being the only recorded block of four of the 1854 6d issue on cover, ex-Purves, with R.P.S.V. certificate.
