British Honduras, 1895 "Caye, Service, 3 cents" Cuthbert Brothers Local Post. Purple typewritten on laid paper. On cover to Newton Barracks, Belize tied by straight line "Cuthbert Bros." handstamp, with additional "Sep 18, 1895" date stamp alongside; some cover creases well away from stamp, F.-V.F.
Estimate; $4,000 - 6,000.

A VERY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE CAYE SERVICE LOCAL POST ISSUE. ONLY AROUND A DOZEN COVERS ARE KNOWN.

Sydney Cuthbert, owner of Belize merchants Cuthbert Bros., commuted daily by steam yacht from his house on St. Georges Cay, a small island just inside the reef in the Bay of Belize. Finding that friends increasingly asked him to carry mail to and from the island, he decided to subsidize his trips charging 3¢ to carry a letter, printing his primitive label for the purpose.
