Antarctica: USA Antarctic Service Expedition 1939-41: Department of the Interior envelope to the Spery Gyroscope Co. in New York (redirected to Boston) bearing 3c. tied by U.S.S. “Bear” Palmer Land duplex with enclosed letter referring to use of gyroscopes and compass, written at East Base by Isak Kristian Tønder Paulsen Lystad (1895-1945), Norwegian born Captain of the “North Star”, both items showing rare circular dated cachet “U.S.S. NORTH STAR/U.S./DEPARTMENT/MAR 20 1940/OF INTERIOR/ANTARCTICA”, minor creasing. Lystad Bay on the west side of Horseshoe Island was later named in the captain’s honour. Photo. (Image1)
