1919 England-Australia Ross & Keith Smith Flight cover with 'GAL[LE FACE H]OTEL' (Colombo) imprint in red on the flap partly obscured by red sealing wax, to ""Ejanding/Via Dowerin/Western Australia" with a superb & exceptionally centred example of the 'FIRST/AERIAL POST/ENGLAND-/AUSTRALIA' flight vignette tied by one of two very fine strikes of the large double-oval 'FIRST AERIAL MAIL/RECEIVED/ 26FEB1920/ GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA' datestamp, the very fine facial appearance not affected by the envelope being slightly trimmed at the top or by repairs to the lower flap, AAMC #27a, Cat $5750+ (2008).  This was the first completed flight from England to Australia, winning the £10,000 prize offered by the Australian Government for the first aviator(s) to achieve this epic feat, that today we take for granted. Tom Frommer (2011) identified 364 covers from the flight, of which this is #171, and illustrated by him at page 54. Most originated in England but significant numbers were uplifted at several intermediate points. At page 11. Frommer identifies only one from Egypt, two from Singapore, and none from Ceylon. This cover would have been uploaded at Calcutta (probably) but it is not included in the 14 covers noted as being from there. At page 13, is a listing of numbers delivered to Australian addresses by State. Queensland received 16, while only 3 went to Tasmania. 19 were addressed to WA, of which Mrs J Jones must have been one of the remotest receipients. Ejanding is 23km NE of Dowerin, which itself is 140km NE of Perth.

1921 (Dec 4) Perth-Derby #56a endorsed at upper-left "Per 1st Aerial Mail", to "Fitzroy Crossing/Via Derby" with Kangaroo 3d (small faults) & KGV 2d orange tied by Perth machine cancel of 3DEC20 and fine strike below of the 'PERTH DERBY/4DE21/W A/AERIAL MAIL' "skeleton" cds, fine 'DERBY/20DEC21/=WESTN AUSTRALIA=' arrival backstamp, central fold & repaired back-flap still of fine appearance, Cat $1000; also a faked cover with KGV ½d & 2d x2 tied by three of four strikes of a forged flight cds & faked 'GERALDTON' arrival backstamp, Cat $400. The most obvious error on the forged cds is that 'W A' is too small. In addition, the Geraldton cds is a total fantasy. RPSofL Certificate (1972) for the genuine cover. This was Australia's first regular airmail service. The mail was flown by three aircraft. Delivery of the Geraldton mail occurred without incident. However, the next day, one plane was forced down by engine trouble, and a second crashed, killing the pilot. Norman Brearley suspended the contract, flew the mails for northern ports back to Perth, from where they were taken by sea per SS 'Bambra' ex Fremantle 10.12.1920, arriving Derby ten days later. (2)

1922 (Apr 13) Perth-Broome commercial cover endorsed "per aerial mail" with KGV 5d tied by large 'SUBIACO' cds (time unusually to right of the date) and a fine strike below of the 'PERTH DERBY/W A/AERIAL MAIL' "skeleton" cds but now with the date slugs removed & 'W A' centred, no arrival backstamp, repaired tears across the flap where roughly opened, a little aged. [The Aerial Mail marking is of a British pattern known as a 'skeleton', in which the inscription is made from moveable type within a collar. Australian PictorMarks' (2013) at page 4 states "It [the 'cds'] was used as a cachet from 5.12.1921 to 8.5.1922]
