Addressed to Augustine Henry of the Imperial Maritime Customs in Mong-tse Yunnan "via Haiphong", with purple Chungking, 28 Sep 96 boxed date stamp and Laokay, Tonkin, 10 Nov, 96 transit cds; light vertical crease and some light tone spots, F.-V.F., a rare and extraordinary usage, this is the only recorded item to Yunnan transiting through Vietnam.

There was no direct route to Montze so this card was carried down river to Shanghai, then by paquetboat and rail to Haiphong and to its destination.

Japanese Foreign-Mail style cds on "Government-General of Taiwan" Telegraph receipt sent from the Italian Consulate in occupied Canton, China (consular cachet of origin on reverse) to the Italian Consulate in Shanghai, Very Fine, a previously unrecorded and extremely rare transition piece.

This item represents the 'missing link' between the horizontal-comb postmarks used in Colonial Taiwan and those introduced in early 1942 for the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. This contemporaneous forerunner is the only known Japanese marking used in mainland China the includes the 'Nippon' designation.
