The famous FERRARY-TAPLING Mauritius Post Office “swap” stamp, being the 1880 Peshawar Special Reprint of the 1877 1 Sanar Black on thick paper, made to be sold to British officers and soldiers taking part in the Second Afghan War. It was produced in a very limited quantity, of which only two or three are known today. Originally in the Tapling collection, it was “swapped” after considerable negotiation with Baron de la Renotière Ferrary. Ferrary gave Tapling the famous Mauritius “Post Office” 2d Blue (now in the British Library) and Tapling gave Ferrary this stamp of Afghanistan, which was considered at the time to have equal value! Provenance: Tapling, Ferrary, Appleton, Boggs, Dietrich (Image)
