Used to Australia: 1934, King George V re-engraved “Seahorse”, 2s6d chocolate brown solo use, tied by blurry “LONDON/AIR MAIL/7 DEC 34” cds on vertically oriented, stiff envelope, blue “BY AIR MAIL/PAR AVION” label, typed address to Hudson Fysh noted Australian Aviator and founder of Quantas Airlines. The letter is addressed to Qantas Empire Airways Ltd. in Brisbane. Bearing on reverse a crisp “AIR MAIL/BRISBANE QLD/7-P 21 DE 34” receiver. (SG 450; Scott 222 )

The addressee, Hudson Fysh (Sir Wilmot Hudson Fysh), founded Qantas in 1920. The company flew only local hops in small aircraft until Dec. 1934 when it formed a new company Qantas Empire Airlines, Ltd, a joint venture with Imperial Airways, a forerunner to British Airways. QEA was to operate the Singapore-Australia leg of the Empire Air Mail service which began December 13-14, less than 7 days after this letter. This is a terrific item addressed to an Australian Aviation legend. This cover dates to the very first month QEA was in operation; Qantas did not fly international passenger service until the following May. Terrific item from the dawn of an important chapter in world aviation. Clean and exhibit-worthy.

Ex J. Krubnick. (SG 450, 444 )

This was flown on the first official New Zealand airmail to the United States. The mail left Auckland for San Francisco on Pan American Airways’ Samoan Clipper (a Sikorsky S-42B flying boat commanded by Captain Ed Musick . The flight crossed the International Date Line and when Musick arrived in Pago Pago, American Samoa, where it was until 1 January before flying to an uninhabited atoll 1700 km south of Hawaii to meet a schooner with supplies. On 3 January, the Samoan Clipper arrived in Honolulu, where the mail was transferred to a Martin 130 flying boat to arrive in San Francisco on 6 January. On the return trip from Pago Pago on January 11th Musick’s plane reported an oil leak, the plane caught fire and exploded. There were no survivors. Perhaps a unique use of a Seahorse as a forwarder on a historically significant flight.
