PRIVATE ESSAYS: 1908 Goodman Syndicate printer's proofs of essays for a proposed Reply Letter Card with the two halves joined within at left, all printed in rosine on pale blue stock with 'GOODMAN'S PATENT' at L/L, one with typed 'Specimen Design' on the reverse, the others with 'POSTMASTER GENERAL'S DEPT/COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA' cachet in violet on the face, one of these with the halves separated & a small "window" cut to allow the word 'REPLY' on the inner-half to show, some minor internal reinforcing & a few minor blemishes. A fascinating trio.
The design was patented in 1905. In 1908 it was offered to the Post Office for £3750. It was rejected on the basis of the cost. In 1910 Portugal issued a reply letter card with the halves joined within at the top. That design was plagiarised for the 1911 1d+1d issue.
