Cat No:291

TEN SHILLINGS: 10/- light olive-green ACSC S72 (SG 291) unlisted shade mint, postally used and CTO (with virtually full original gum) singles, the mint & CTO stamps with old hinge remainders, Cat $900 (£565) for the normal shade. This is a controversial stamp. Bill Purves at pages 185-186 discusses the discovery of four examples and inclines towards them being an "error of colour", printed in the same shade as the 3d. However, others have questioned this. In a footnote, the ACSC states "There is still some controversy...but it is generally considered that the stamp is a colour changeling". We have observed that the mint stamp is in a paler and more yellow shade, and that stamp may indeed be a colour changeling. Necessarily offered "as is". (3)

Cat No:291

TEN SHILLINGS: 10/- sage-green ACSC S68 (SG 291) plus 6d & 1/- x2 pairs - probably all from the Crown/A issue - & 1d rosine tied to parcel piece by 'REGD ADELAIDE/STH AUSTRALIA' cds with largely indistinct 1912 date. A very rare franking, being the only postal article known by us franked with the 10/-. The 6d is Cat $400 on cover, but the 1/- & 10/- are both unpriced on cover. Ex Don Pearce: sold for $688. The item has been franked a total of 14/7d (presumably including 3d registration). The highest recorded parcel rates at the time were 5/8d for an interstate parcel or 7/- for a parcel to Britain, parcels being limited to items weighing no more than 11lb (pounds). However, rates to foreign countries, while largely unknown, were much higher. We believe, therefore, that it was sent to a foreign destination, probably Germany or the United States. This, of course, is conjecture and we would welcome any suggestions based on knowledge of the actual rates.
