Ultra-High Values  Recess (Engraved) Printings £25 dull green (light cancel with illegible date), £50 bright violet (cds of AU1/97) and £100 aniline crimson (cds of NO13/99) SG 283b, 284 & 285c all with full margins, CTO with virtually full original gum and very lightly mounted, Cat £4600. A wonderful set of great charm and rarity. Ex Nick Holness (sold at our auction of 23.9.2011 for $3495) and 'Dubois' (I), where offered in error as the Typographed Issue SG 289-291, Cat £2250, and sold for SFr2195. Fun facts: These Victorian stamps, printed directly from the dies in perforated sheetlets of one, were issued in 1879, becoming valid for postage from 1.1.1884. They should be recognised as the first issue of miniature sheets in the world, being issued 46 years earlier than Luxembourg's 1923 10fr issue. Note that not a single postally used example of any of these stamps has been recorded. Gibbons prices are for CTO stamps. From 1897, complete sets of defaced current stamps could be purchased from the GPO for £1 (½d to £1) or £5 for a complete set to £100.
