#37c, 1872 3c Dull red, horiz. pair and single along with 1c Yellow (#35) making a 10c rate, tied to 1880 cover to Mile Gully, Jamaica by "Halifax, N.S./Canada/MY 31, 80" c.d.s., Mile Gully receiving c.d.s on the front and Kingston transit on the reverse, opened a little roughly at top but not affecting the stamps, a very fine usage to a scarce destination; ex-Arfken. #35, 37, 38, 1873-76 1c Yellow (2), 3c Red and 5c Slate green, all tied to an impressive and unusual cover to Afghanistan, this cover is addressed to "H. Martin Sandbach Esq. R.A/Harara Mountain Battery/ Lundi Kotel," the stamps are tied by circular grid cancels with "Montreal/Que/FE 6 80" c.d.s. also tying a 1c Yellow, sent via Brindisi, with various London and Indian transits on the reverse, edge flaws to one 1c Yellow and 5c Slate green and backflap missing from reverse, still a fine and very rare three-color franking cover of the second Afghan War. "Registered" h.s., "St. Mary's/C.W./MY 17 75" c.d.s. at lower left. London transit and bkst. Ingersoll on reverse as well as registry handstamps on the reverse incl. "Registered/GW.R." indicating that it went by rail on the Great Western Railroad, also wax seals of the Federal Bank of Canada at St. Mary's, stamps are fresh and attractive, a very fine cover; ex-Vincent Greene with his h.s. on reverse and Dr. Frank. Unitrade #37i, 1871 3c Dark rose on thick paper, tied to a neat orange cover to St. Joseph, Quebec by numeral "3" two ring cancel of Quebec with that city's February 17, 1871 c.d.s. at bottom left, backstamped, stamp is fresh with fine centering and a very fine cover; this thick paper which is really soft and almost like blotting paper is from a very scarce Ottawa printing and seldom found on cover (Scott #37 var.).
