TH Saunders Paper Words of Value Watermark 3d bright blue SG 90a with Void Corner at Upper-Left Pos [C7], characteristic uneven perfs, small-part untidy duplex cancel largely clear of the variety. A more advanced state than that illustrated by Geoff Kellow at page 132. Scarce variety.
TH Saunders Paper Words of Value Watermark 4d rose-pink SG 92 with Major Cracked Electro above Queen's Head (Distorted Inner Oval) Pos [C15], light Barred Numeral '173' of Daylesford (rated R) largely clear of the variety, several trimmed perfs at top, plus 4d rose-carmine SG 92b with the same Cracked Electro and also Pre-Printing Paper Fold through Base of Queen's Neck, small-part duplex cancel entirely clear of the crack. Cat No:92d horizontal
TH Saunders Paper Words of Value Watermark 4d dull rose Emergency Printing on 'FIVE/SHILLINGS' Watermark Paper SG 92d horizontal pair with clearly-dated Melbourne duplex of SE-11/62 being the earliest known date of use, a few uneven perfs, Cat £50+. A scarce & important multiple.
TH Saunders Paper Words of Value Watermark 6d orange SG 93, neat Barred Numeral '1' of Melbourne, Cat £750. Geoff Kellow states at page 136 that "it is probably the Colony's rarest [face-different] stamp, and particularly so in fine condition".
TH Saunders Paper Words of Value Watermark 6d orange SG 93, a huge example, exceptional centring with the design clear of the perfs on all sides and 'jumbo' margins at the sides & a fragment of the adjoining unit at right, untidy Barred Numeral cancel fortunately leaving most of the design clear, Cat £750. Ex Les Molnar; sold at our auction of 29.6.2012 for $748 (when catalogued at £325).
TH Saunders Paper Words of Value Watermark 6d pale orange SG 93, exceptional centring with the perfs clear of the design on all sides, light Barred Numeral cancel, Cat £750+, for the deeper shade. Another also superb example in this rare shade sold at our auction of 16.5.2023 for $2760. Geoff Kellow at page 137 suggests the pale shade may have been caused caused by the corrosive properties of the ink which lead to the early termination of printings in this colour.
De La Rue Paper Single-Lined Numerals Watermark 4d rose-red Rouletted 8 SG 95c, small-part Ballarat duplex cancel, Cat £250. Geoff Kellow states at page 135 that "it seems certain that the perforating machine broke down ... in the emergency the stamps were issued imperforate, and less frequently, rouletted ... the roulette was used in Melbourne ... and the only other record is at Geelong". The imperforates are known used at Ballarat (see next lot) and this item suggests that the rouletted stamps were also issued there.
De La Rue Paper Single-Lined Numerals Watermark 4d dull rose-pink Imperforate SG 95d horizontal pair, margins just shaved at left to large, tied to small piece by superb 'BALLAARAT/AU 2/63 - VICTORIA' duplex cancel, Cat £250+ for singles. Geoff Kellow states at page 135 that "the earliest date is 31 July 1863 ... The only multiples ... are used pairs ... perhaps two dozen of the imperf". Les Molnar's pair - also on piece with Ballarat duplex later in the same month - sold at our auction of 29.6.2012 for $506.
