Unlike the Large Star Wmk 4d (see previous lots), these were supposed to be rouletted on all sides. Geoff Kellow states at page 118 that "Two errors of omission of the roulettes are known...a used vertical pair is known with no roulettes horizontally". Geoff Kellow states at page 114 that "This perforating machine was not introduced until early in 1859, long after the Star printing was exhausted, and the only explanation is that a few sheets were discovered in the PO stock and perforated. About two dozen copies are known" [our emphasis]. Ex Gary Diffen; sold at our auction of 29.1.2008 for $575 (when catalogued at £300). Les Molnar's example - "one of the finest" (but with perfs just into the design at right) - sold at our auction of 29.6.2012 for $1093.

Cat No:77

Samuel Calvert Printings No Watermark Perforated 12 by Robinson 2d pale lilac SG 77, very fine Barred Numeral '151' of Pitfield (rated RR), Cat £450. Geoff Kellow states at page 115 that "these must be cases of imperforate sheets being found in stock and perforated by Robinson in early 1859 ... there are about a dozen used singles. The cancellations found are Barred Numerals 1 (Melbourne), 2 (Geelong) and 3 (Castlemaine)". Pitfield is about 40km SW of Ballarat. Absent from Ken Barelli's collection. Les Molnar's three examples sold at our auction of 29.6.2012 for an average of $587 each (the well-centred, lightly-cancelled example bringing $863).

William Robinson Earlier Printings No Watermark Perf 12 4d dull rose-red on Vertically Laid Paper SG 80, small-part Barred Numeral cancel, grossly under-catalogued at £325. Geoff Kellow states at page 119 that by the time Robinson began perforating remaining stock in January 1859 "all this printing (or what remained of it) should have been rouletted. The perf 12 stamps must come from a few sheets perforated as an experiment, or found imperforate at a later date. About eight copies are known" [our emphasis]. The catalogue price has remained unchanged since before Ken Barelli's example - "remarkably well centred" - sold at our auction of 2.5.2014 for $1840.
