Scott No. 30; $1,200.

A STUNNING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 5-CENT ORANGE BROWN.

The 5¢ stamps in the Orange Brown shade (Scott 30) were printed from Plate 2 in 1861. They were the last stamps of the 1857 Issue distributed before the Post Office Department demonetized all circulating stamps in August 1861 due to the Civil War. Unused remainders were discovered in the South after the war, and so unused copies are readily available. However, it is difficult to find this issue in sound and centered original-gum condition.

A LOVELY USED EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 1857 10¢ TYPE IV SHOWING THE SINGLE RECUT AT TOP FROM POSITION 74L1.

1860, 90¢ blue. O.g., previously hinged, light natural bend, wonderful Post Office color & freshness, beautifully centered, an Extremely Fine gem, with 1996 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 39; $3,000.

A GORGEOUS EXAMPLE OF THIS ICONIC HIGH VALUE WHICH IS RARELY FOUND IN THIS CHOICE CONDITION.

The high denomination stamps of the 1857 Issue were needed to prepay high international letter rates established by various postal treaties. When supplies of current postage stamps were demonetized by the Federal government, the 90¢ had been in use for only one year. Most unused examples come from supplies recovered from Southern post offices. The vast majority of these have no gum or poor centering, this is an extraordinary exception to the rule.
