In combination with 1861, 1¢ blue, type II (20, both plate 12) and 1860, 1¢ blue, type V, two singles (24, plate 10) paying the 3¢ single rate plus 1¢ carrier fee on cover to New Monmouth, N.J., all "tied by New York, Sep 25, 1861" cds's and grid duplex, with large "William Jay Hasket, Proctor & Advocate of the United States Court of Admiralty" advertising label; right stamp (20) with small margin nick at lower right, otherwise Very Fine, a rare and attractive three type 1¢ combination from two plates, ex-Nienken & Wagshal.

1857, 1¢ blue, type IIIa. Plate 11, light unobtrusive town cancel, exceptional centering and wide margins clearly showing wide break in top frameline clearly visible, rich vibrant color, Extremely Fine to Superb, one of the finest extant, with only two grading higher (both at 95J), ex-Merlin, "Natalee Grace" & Myerson, with 2005 P.S.E. certificate Graded (XF-Sup 95, SMQ $5,550).

A MAGNIFICENT GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 1¢ TYPE IIIA ISSUE FROM PLATE 11.

Plate 11 stamps were placed into use at the very end of 1860, approximately six months before new National Banknote stamps were to be issued. These stamps suffered as a rule from rather poor perforating making plate 11 stamps far more difficult to obtain in such exceptional condition.

Oct 22" double-circle datestamp duplexed with grid on orange buff cover to Detroit, Michigan, blue "OLD STAMPS / Not Recognized" two-line handstamp and matching "Held for Postage" oval, 3¢ rose (65), bright shade, tied by blue "Chicago Ill. Oct 23" double-circle datestamp with duplexed grid; reduced at left barely into corner card and blue oval, fresh and Very Fine, ex-West, Krug and Antrim.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE RARE CHICAGO "OLD STAMPS NOT RECOGNIZED" HANDSTAMP, OF WHICH ONLY TWO RECORDED WITH THE 1861 ISSUE USED IN COMBINATION WITH THE DEMONETIZED 1857 ISSUE.

The Chicago post office marked the covers with a recording number that corresponds to advertised notices that mail was being held for postage.

Our records contain only four covers bearing the Chicago "Old Stamps Not Recognized" handstamp as follows:
1. 1861 Aug. 30, Chicago Ill. to St. Peter Minn., 3¢ #26 franking, ex-Grunin, Piller.
2. 1861 Oct. 02, Chicago Ill. to Wiscasset Me., 3¢ #26 franking, ex-Haas, Lake Shore.
3. 1861 Oct. 22, Chicago Ill. to Detroit Mich., 3¢ #26, 3¢ #65 franking, ex-West, Krug and Antrim, the cover offered here.
4. 1861 Jun. 13, Chicago Ill. to Boston Mass., 3¢ #26, 3¢ #65 franking, ex-Challenger.
