Cat No:19

JS Campbell & Co Printings Clear Impressions 2d purple-brown as SG 19 but Substituted Transfer Stone 5 'GM' Pos [42], margins large to huge, fine Barred Oval '2' cancel of Geelong. Superb. RPSofV Certificate (2008). Gibbons list Substituted Transfers only for the subsequent Poor Impressions printing as SG 20ca Cat £3000 (for a pair). The 'GM' letter combination was Pos 32 on the stone. However, as Geoff Kellow states at page 74, the lower-left corner block of four [FL-GM/QV-RW] was damaged, and substituted with a new transfer comprising [VZ-WA/FL-GM]. Kellow records only eight Substituted Transfer pieces known, seven pairs (several of which are defective) and this single, adding that "Examples of [41] & [42] with base margin are abnormal". Sold at our auction of 13.6.2009 for $1553.

Cat No:36/38 group

Campbell & Fergusson Printings 2d SG 36/38 group, Creased Transfers on annotated pages comprising Stone A Broken Right Frame & Cut 'S' Pos [NS] in a horizontal pair & Left Frame Broken & Duplicated Pos [OT] and Stone C Bent Left Frame Pos [NS], Duplicated Right Frame Pos [OT] & Left Frame Shifted Pos [PU] in a horizontal pair, Squashed Bases of Pillars Pos [ZC] x2, also Thumbprint Flaw and Retouches Stone A Colour Flaw at Base of Gown Pos [OS] & Stone C Colour Flaw above Throne Pos [DH], all are full-margin examples, a few with minor creases/thins but generally fine to very fine facial appearance. Geoff Kellow states at page 77 that "There are three stamps showing major creases [on Stone A] ... The 'TVO' is the most spectacular ... but no rarer than the other two" and of Stone C (p78) that "the best of these are the equal if not better than the 'TVO' variety". The only Creased Transfer listed by Gibbons is the 'TVO' variety SG 36b Cat £1400 used. An excellent specialist lot.  (9 singles + 2 pairs)

Campbell & Fergusson Printings Early Impressions from Over-Used Stones 2d as SG 37 but in pale bright brown on Shiny Surfaced Paper Pos [CG], margins good to large, very fine Barred Oval '1' cancel of Melbourne. Superb. Geoff Kellow states at page 77 that this "very distinctive and rare shade ... may be a colour trial". A rare multiple. Geoff Kellow states at page 78 that this and other related varieties are "as scarce as the TVO variety" and, in this instance, more dramatic. Ex Charles Lathrop Pack, Dr RN Wawn, JRW Purves & Rodney Perry. RPSofV Certificate (2006). Cat No:73

Perkins Bacon Printings 6d blue as SG 73 but Perf 12 on three sides & Imperf at the Base well clear of the design, untidy but light cancel. Unlisted by Gibbons and believed to be the only recorded example. Ex Rodney Perry; Guido Craveri; Les Molnar (sold at our auction of 29.6.2012 for $1980); and 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr732.  Illustrated at page 104 by Geoff Kellow who states: "Examples have been reported Perf 12 and Perf 12xRouletted." He also states that "Their status is uncertain, and these may be bogus". However, the issued stamp was rouletted and there is no evidence of rouletting on this example. In addition, the perfs match other Perf 12 stamps from the SG 74 to 82 issue. Our conclusion is that, as with other contemporary issues, imperforate remainders of the Queen-on-Throne 6d - perhaps only one sheet - were perforated by Robinson in early-1859. It should be listed by Gibbons between SG 80 & 81.

Cat No:73

Perkins Bacon Printings 6d bright blue as SG 73 but Imperforate with large even margins, light but indistinct Barred Numeral cancel, tiny nick in the top margin only does not detract. A great rarity. Geoff Kellow refers at page 103 only to the release in England in the late-19th century of imperforate remainders of the 1d & 6d. Of the latter he states "because the whole stock of 6d's received in Victoria were rouletted prior to issue ... [these] represent an imperforate variety. Five copies only are known - two pairs (one in the Tapling Collection ...) and a single in the Royal Collection". Although not explicitly stated, these are presumably all unused, as was the example sold at our auction of 1.3.2020 for $3540. [The illustration is above Lot 921]  It is highly improbable that the London remainders are the source of this example. Our conclusion is that this stamp is from a locally issued part-imperf or wholly imperf sheet. Accordingly, this item is the only known example of an imperforate 6d issued and used in Victoria. [Submitted to the RPSofV for expertising]
