1847, 5¢ red brown. Margins large to just into frameline at top, tied by red grid handstamps on 1851 folded letter sheet to Bordeaux, France, matching "New Orleans, La., Jun 15" cds, red "Colonies, &c Arts. 13" accountancy box handstamp, red Calais transit cds and "15" decimes due handstamp, reverse with receiving postmark; some minor cover wear, Very Fine, a rare transatlantic usage sent on the last packet prior to the demonetization of the 1847 issue, ex-Mirsky.

1847, 5¢ red brown. Two singles, both with large margins and bright color, each tied by blue grid cancel with contrasting red "Detroit Mich. Nov 23" cds on blue 1849 folded cover to Buffalo N.Y.; bottom stamp small tear at top and affected by horizontal file fold, still Very Fine and scarce combination of blue and red markings, ex-Ackerman, Sampson, Hart, Mirsky, with 1969 P.F. certificate.

Ample to large margins, manuscript canceled with matching "Way 1" on folded letter to New Orleans, La., datelined "Mobile 18th Feby 1851", red "New Orleans, La., Feb 19" cds struck upon arrival; vertical file fold affecting stamp, otherwise Very Fine, a rare 1847 issue "Way" usage, cover carried by steamer through the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans with the way fee for the carrier, ex-Mirsky.

1847, 5¢ dark brown. Huge margins except clear at bottom, tied by red "6" in circle handstamp, matching red "New-York Aug 24" cds on folded cover to Plattsburgh N.Y., manuscript "Due" and red "5" handstamp to left of stamp; some cover toning, 5¢ small scissors-cut entirely in margin at lower right, Very Fine and scarce cancellation on the 1847 Issue, ex-Caspary, Boker, Mirsky, with 2001 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 1a; Estimate $500 - 750.

Plattsburgh is just over 300 miles from New York City, and therefore required 10¢ postage for the over 300 mile rate. The 5¢ stamp was accepted as partial payment and the cover was marked 5¢ due. A very unusual use with the "6" rate handstamp, which was normally used for inbound ship letters.

Large margins, bright shade, tied by partial strike of red "New-York Jul 10" cds, second strike adjacent, on 1851 bluish folded letter to Berlin, Prussia, endorsed "Via Ostende" at lower left, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Canada from Boston Jun. 11th to Liverpool Jun. 21st, red London (6.22) backstamp with manuscript "1/6" 1s6d due rating, red Ostende (6.24) backstamp and blue manuscript "18½" silbergroschen due from addressee, Berlin (6.25) arrival backstamp; stamp lifted with two creases pressed and put back on cover which it originated, New York postmarks slightly enhanced, Very Fine appearance, with 2000 P.F. certificate.

A RARE USE OF THE 1847 ISSUE TO BERLIN, PRUSSIA IN THE SCARCE ORANGE BROWN SHADE.

Only two covers bearing the 1847 issue are recorded to Berlin, the other is an attempted demonetized use where most of the stamp was torn away.

Sent aboard the Cunard "Acadia" departing New York on June 21st and arriving at Liverpool on July 5th. This is a pre-treaty usage to England paying the 10¢ domestic rate which are much scarcer then treaty letters which occurred after February 21, 1849.
