1847, 5¢ red brown. Large margins, bright color, tied by blue numeral "5" in Circle cancel and matching "Baltimore Md. Mar 30" cds on cover addressed to the care of General S. Van Rensselaer in Albany N.Y.; stamp with additional lightened manuscript cancel, still a fresh and Very Fine use, ex-Brown, Boker, Mirsky, with 2001 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 1; Estimate $500 - 750.

The distance between Baltimore and Albany was just over 300 miles, so this should have 10¢ postage. Either it was paid 10¢ with the 5¢ stamp and 5¢ cash, or perhaps it was allowed to pass to the well-known General Van Rensselaer. This cover is illustrated and described in a Chronicle 222 article by Harvey Mirsky.

Two singles, right stamp pos. 41R1 with Type D double transfer and large margins showing 4.5mm left sheet margin, other full to slightly in, tied together by two strikes of red circular grid cancel, matching red "Roswell Ga. 13 Feb" cds on cover to Darien Ga.; stamps with faint toning spots, F.-V.F., with 2008 P.F. certificate.

A RARE INTRA-STATE USE OF THE 10¢ 1847 FROM GEORGIA, THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE AT DOUBLE THE 10¢ RATE FOR OVER 300 MILES.

There are no double-rate 10¢ covers among the eight 10¢ Roswell covers listed in the Alexander Census, and only one in all of Georgia to Massachusetts. There are no intrastate double-rate 10¢ covers listed for any of the Southern states. Letter written by George Hull Camp (1818-1907), originally from Utica NY and later relocated to Roswell, Ga. to his wife, Jane Margaret (Atwood) (1826-1911) from Darien, Ga. They were married on April 9, 1850 making this cover an 1851 usage. George probably wrote to her while she was visiting her parents in Darien.

1847, 5¢ red brown. Enormous margins all around with framelines of adjoining stamps at top and left, intense shade, criss-crossing pen cancellation, remarkable and Extremely Fine, ex-Mirsky.

There are a total of 31 criss-crossing lines in this pen cancel, which would have required significant time to apply. This stamp was obviously cancelled by a postal clerk with lots of time on his hands and a deep desire to prevent re-use.
