Bahia (BA) 1843, 60r black, early impression, vertical strip of three from the left of the sheet, outstandingly strong colour and detailed design with margins ranging from very good to enormous at left, displaying two complete strikes of "BAHIA" straight-line hs (Ayres 1129), exceptionally showing horizontal line between the frames of the second and third stamps. Small reparation below the "60" denomination at base. A spectacular exhibition item, featuring an exceptional alignment line in margin which we could not find in any other multiple. Note: According to our research, this multiple originates from the Second Large Plate, State A, with positions 31/37/43 (6th, 7th & 8th rows). The line between the positions 37 and 43 was probably applied by the printer in order to properly align the designs of the stamps on the plate. It is a mysterious feature which we presume can be only found in the first sheets printed, prior to this line being burnished. Interestingly the Napier plating does not show this variety in any of its plates. It would be much rarer and therefore more interesting than a semi-xiphopagus. (Image)

Ceará (CE) 1843, 60r black, intermediate impression, large margins being nicely balanced, deep colour, cancelled by neat framed "CEARA" postmark (Ayres 1274). Of remarkable freshness, one of the finest usages found of about thirty-five 60r. known used from this locality. (Image)

Maranhão (MA) 1843, 60r black, worn impression, good even margins all around, cancelled by "CORREIO DE MARANHÅO" cds (Ayres 1615). Tiny filled thins on reverse which are almost invisible, but a remarkable example as just three 60r are known with this postmark in red. (Image)

Paraíba do Norte (PB) 1843, 30r black, intermediate impression, large margin at left, good margins in other respects, attractively cancelled by "C.G. DA PARAHIBA DO NORTE" cds from Paraíba. Very fine, one of only two 30r recorded with this postmark. (RHM unpriced for the 30r). (Image)

Paranaguá (SP) 1843, 90r black, late impression, a well margined example featuring the "cracked plate" - "chapa quebrada" variety consisting in colourless area below the "9" at left within the 'eye', where a black flaw is located with traces of the printing ink extending to the left margin, and the frame line being broken in two places at left, cancelled by framed "PARANAGUÁ." hs in black (Ayres 1384). A very fine example of this exceedingly scarce variety, being further enhanced by an unusual cancellation; no examples of this rarity were found in the Luis Alemany Indarte and Hugo Goeggel collections. Pernambuco (PE) 1843, 90r black, early impression, a uniformly and largely margined example boasting a strong colour, tied to piece by "CORR° DE PERN°" 'shield' datestamp (Ayres 1548), dated 3.1.1844. Superb and delightful for exhibition. (RHM $3'200). (Image)

Sobral (CE) 1843, 30r black, worn impression, position 1, good to mainly large margins, showing "SOBRAL" straight line in brown (Ayres 1177) and framed "CEARA" handstamp in black (Ayres 1274). An exceptional example of two different postmarks used in conjunction on a "Bull's Eyes" stamp, with very few recorded exhibiting this combination considering all denominations. Ex Alemany Indarte.
