image WATERLOO HERO & VETERAN - FLAG-BEARER WILLIAM LEEKE - PERSONAL LETTER-BAG; c.1842 large (8½x12 ins.) personal leather letter-pouch with brass clasp (carrying strap lost; good worn condition suggesting being in use for maybe 35 years) inscribed "Revd. W. Leeke, HOLBROOK"; presumably used for letters sent between Rev. Leeke's vicarage in the small village of Holbrook (Derbys.) and Belper Head P.O. William Leeke was the vicar at Holbrook from 1842 until his death in 1879. In 1815, the 17-year-old Leeke (1798-1879) had carried the colours of the 52nd Regiment in the thick of (and throughout) the 9-hour Battle of Waterloo; his graphic memoirs were published in 1866 (excerpts included with this lot). Unusually large for a bag devoted to the mail of a single individual, and with a fascinating history; perhaps Leeke posted sections of his memoirs to his published in 1866 in this very bag....Cross Reference: DERBYSHIRE, MILITARY - NAPOLEONIC WAR, WRITING EQUIPMENT, LETTER SCALES, ETC.
