image ANTI-SLAVE SHIP PATROL COVER - EX H.M.S. 'SERPENT' AT BARBADOS EN ROUTE FOR THE AMAZON; Remarkable 16 Mar. 1834 EL (overall toning and some worn folds and a couple of closed tears around seal area but complete and sound) from "Wm. M. This ship later (29 June 1835) captured the Spanish slaver 'Tita' between Cuba & Turks with 394 slaves from Whydah on board (bound for Matanzas). A very early letter from a British anti-slave vessel. [The Serpent was also almost wrecked off Spithead in a Nov. 1836 hurricane - print included - and in the 1840s she was active in the China/Hong Kong area.] Cross Reference: SLAVES AND SLAVERY, BARBADOS, NAVAL MAIL, KENT (Image)
