image KANO-SOKOTO EXPEDITION - RARE O.A.S. "BUSH SERVICE NO STAMPS PROCURABLE" COVER TO G.B., ETC.; 6 Jan. 1903 stampless env. (fine red WAFF motif on flap; with some creasing and wear but with original contents) from "Mounted Infantry, Zaria, Northern Nigeria" to Kent endorsed "Bush service, no stamps procurable" above the address and so allowed as Active Service mail with v. fine Plymouth "1D/620" on the front, having a partial Lokoja "NORTHERN NIGERIA" cds backstamp; ref. assembling the "Expedition for which we are mobilizing all the spare troops in the country - our destination is Kano & subsequently Katsena & Sokoto... 1200 infantry, 5 guns & 100 M[ounte]d Infantry...". Plus 3 covers to the same addressee with KEVII 1d single (1904; "...A" cds) or Pair (1904; pen cancel + 2-ring YOLA cds cancel), or with KGV 1d (1924; KANO 2-ring cds cancel). image THE 'ALEXANDER-GOSLING' EXPEDITION - INGOING MAIL EX G.B. VIA LOKOJA/IBI OR GONDOKORO; Remarkable group of 1904 (10) or 1906 (2) KEVII envs. (condition varies) all 1d rates from Kent (except one ex Bath with 2½d) to the leader of this little known trans-Africa Expedition, Boyd Alexander (the 1906 pair) or to his brother Claud who accompanied him but died en route in Oct. 1904 (the 1904 group); the first 2 sent c/o Lokoja PO, the next 8 (all 1904 with Lokoja and/or Zungeru backstamps) c/o the Ibi P.O., and the 1906 pair to "Gondokoro" (with Sudan TPO & Khartoum backstamps). Plus battered stamp-removed Sept. 1905 env. ex Brazzaville (ex Alexander himself??) to Kent, and a Jan. 1906 stamp-removed env. from France to Alexander the Expedition at "Mahazi, Lake Albert, Congo" but endorsed "Lado" in red (Leopoldville, "WADELAI/J.P." and "NIMULI/UGANDA" backstamps).
