Smith in Calcutta, with manuscript note on back reading “J.B. Scholte / pilot G-AADZ / "Maryland Free State” / carried from London to Calcutta / June 10th, 1929″ with 10 JUN.29 Calcutta receiver. The Fokker aircraft (ex-PH-ADP Netherlands registry) was re-registered in the UK as G-AADZ on 8.2.1929 and named "Maryland Free State". It was written off (damaged beyond repair) when crashed on landing at Calcutta 10.6.1929. Van Lear Black's Fokker aircraft crashed at Dum Dum airport, and then was destroyed at Calcutta, India by a cyclone, though the crew of five (crew of two plus three passengers) escaped injury. Van Lear Black (also owner of the US newspaper the Baltimore Sun) travelled back to England by train, and ordered a new "Maryland Free State" to complete his planned trip from London to Tokyo.
