image NAPOLEONIC WARS - ISLAND OF ALDERNEY - 1d CONCESSION RATE EX "R[OYAL]. INVALIDS" REGIMENT; Remarkable 4 July 1796 front + flap sent from the tiny island of "Alderney" to London with mainly fine "SOUTHAMPTON/SHIP-LRE" on the front and London arrival cds (7 July) on the flap. It was initially charged "5[d]" but this was changed to "1[d]" - the Soldiers' 1d Concession rate - when the military status of both addressee (Musician in the 3d Regt. of Guards Orderly Room" and sender (with signed authorisation on the flap; "W. Mackenzie Stewart, Lieut. Commanding R[oyal]. Invalids [Regiment], Alderney 4th July 1796") was noticed. Very rare place of origin and very early example of the 1d Concession Rate.Cross Reference: ALDERNEY POSTAL HISTORY, MILITARY - PENNY CONCESSION RATES, SHIP LETTERS, HAMPSHIRE (Image)

image LETTER FROM FRIEND REF. NELSON & LADY HAMILTON (RARE 'PP/1800') + "NELSON & BRONTE" SIGNED PIECE; 1800 EL (minor internal toning well away from text) from an unidentified writer (probably ex Vienna) to London with "FOREIGN OFFICE" cds and a fine strike - bottom frame just struck off the edge - of the rare 'PP/1800' London FB transfer h.s. The letter, in French, is gossipy and mentions that the writer had spent several days "intimement avec Nelson" (his close friend), admiring his heroic temperament and saying that he had been invited to stay with him in London; "une fraternité d'armes comme les anciens Chevaliers". He also mentions the "dame de ses penseés la fameuse Lady Hamilton, l'amie intime de la Reine de Naples", etc. Most interesting and worthy of further research. [Ex Charless Hahn, 2006.] Plus small c.1805 piece with Nelson's "Nelson & Bronte" autograph. (2 items)Cross Reference: AUTOGRAPHS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, AUSTRIA, MILITARY - NAPOLEONIC WAR (Image)

image CRIMEAN WAR - PENCIL DRAWING OF BALAKLAVA AREA IN UNPAID COVER TO G.B. WITH H.S "3" MARK; 28 Nov. 1854 EL (minor edge wear) endorsed on the front as being from "Balaklava" and "Via Marseilles" to London with partial blue "POST OFFICE/[BRITISH] ARMY" cds on flap but also with very fine scarce London Handstruck "3" charge-mark on the front. The contents include a pencil sketch of the writer's surroundings; "I have headed this letter with an attempt to depict an outline of the positions here; the little works marked half up the hills are the Guns of positions connected by infantry all intrenched, that in centre low is where our guns are and Sir C[olin]. C[ampbell]. has established himself, and you see into the harbour, the entrance of which is closed by the old Genoese castle...". Rare uncensored depiction of the British defences during the early stages of the Crimean War.Cross Reference: MILITARY - CRIMEAN WAR, PICTORIALS, HAND-DRAWN, POSTAGE DUE MARKS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY (Image)

image ITALY 1860 PAPAL STATES IRISH BRIGADE LETTERS/EARLY VOYAGE TO AUSTRALIA: Two interesting letters (contents only, no postal markings) written by Lieutenant/Captain Alfred Lawless to his father, from Spoleto, Papal States and dated 12 Jul. 1860 & 7 Aug. 1860. Transcripts accompany. Lawless commanded a company of 120 men in the St. Patrick's Brigade of the Papal Army and mentions his relationship with some of the 'more famous' figures such as Gen. Lamoriciere & Major O'Reilly. Contents ref. mention privations, lack of uniforms, weapons, etc. "Don't believe what you see in the papers at home...the men here have been most shamefully and disgracefully treated.....3 weeks sleeping on straw that is not fit for a pig." Letter mentions amicable relations between the Irish contingent and Swiss and Austrian allies, but enmity in camp with Italian allies e.g. "A terrible fight commenced on the first night, seven men were most frightfully wounded by the Italians who were armed but our poor men were not....you hear nothing of this in Dublin." The writer mentions a drastic form of censorship "I saw one in power here burn 300 letters belonging to the men.". Possibly explains the paucity of material from this campaign! Alfred Lawless died at Spoleto (probably of 'fever') later in Aug. 1860. Lot also includes several pages of a diary kept by Lawless on a voyage to Australia aboard HMS 'Warspirit' in 1857. image WWII - POW MAIL FROM SAIGON RECOVERED FROM AIR CRASH IN IRELAND: Extremely rare 1943 POW card (central fold and edge ware) sent from Sgt. Finch, (who at this time was a POW in Saigon, having been amongst the first transport during April 1942) to Mrs. Finch in Croydon. Thailand POW Camp marks. (administration of Saigon POWs remained with the Japanese in Thailand, and all cards issued are identical whether used in Indo China or Thailand, so only by having details from other sources can the exact location of a prisoner be known). Kerry on 28 Jul. 1943. The plane carried c.30,000 POW letters of which 90% were destroyed. Cross Reference: MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, IRELAND, CRASH/WRECK MAIL, THAILAND/SIAM (Image)
