c.1925 Proofs comprising a Lion Rampant and copies of the head vignettes of King George V (as used for the 1912-18 issue of Canada), President Franklin (as used for the 1894-95 USA 1c), and King Alphonso (as used for the 1922-30 issue of Spain), the vignettes all incomplete, printed in black on wove paper. An unusual piece, 112x81mm, the printer unknown.

image Various artwork and proofs from the papers of Stanley D. Scott, who worked for Waterlow & Sons from 1935-40 and 1946-61, becoming Manager of the Artists Department, and then went to work for Harrison & Sons. The interesting lot includes a fine large painting of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia on card with two die proofs of this portrait, probably produced for a banknote; two examples of security printing in differing colours inscribed "WATERLOW & SONS LIMITED", and proofs of various security printed background designs (11) probably all produced for banknotes; 1976 Concorde Bahrain to London cover with signatures of the flight crew on a separate overlay; handpainted edge pattern designs (6) and a picture of Spanish Conquistadors fighting South American Indians, produced for documents or banknotes; Sultan of Brunei portrait, printed and photographic proofs; artwork of ships and boats on thick card (5); heraldic design artwork and photographic proofs (3); 1984 TUC Tolpuddle Martyrs F.D.C original artwork (2) and proof; transparent overlay with handpainted Beefeater and Tower of London; artwork and proofs (2) of an unknown man; stamp size photos of fishing industry artwork (8), etc. Also a 1961 copy letter from Waterlow confirming Scott's 26 years service and stating he is only leaving due to the closure of the Waterlow factory. Photographs of various essays from the papers of Stanley Scott, artist at Waterlow and later Harrisons (see lot 766) comprising stamp size coloured photos of unadopted Bahrain stamps (11, three in colour), an unadopted Trinidad 1980 Queen Mother 80th Birthday stamp and two unadopted Uruguay stamps (dated 1951); similar stamp size photos of artwork for Malta 1970 U.N Anniversary stamps (3), Uruguay 1954 stamps (3), Mauritius 1972 Theatre Anniversary pair, Malaysia 1971 Negara Bank 25s (4), Malta 1971 booklet covers (2), 1980 Ivory Coast bird stamps in colour (4), and arms inscribed "Majulah Singapura"; also Republic of Cuba cigar stamp imperforate proof in green attached to a Harrison & Sons Ltd card and a photographic proof of the same stamp. An interesting group, some probably the only surviving record of certain unadopted designs. (Proof + photos of 34 essays).

1976-83 Original artwork for various stamps comprising Montserrat Christmas 1983 $2 adopted design; Liberia 1979 OAU 16th Anniversary unadopted designs (4); St Vincent 1978 Butterflies, adopted designs for the five values by Daphne Padden; artwork showing the Prince of Wales feathers, apparently for a Republic of Comores souvenir sheet; and Republic of Niger 250f air post stamp adopted design, also progressive colour proofs of the Niger stamp in the four single colours, in blue and yellow or in the issued colours. (12 essays + 6 proofs).
