Overprinted 'VA.'

image BLACK OVERPRINT: 'VA.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Wmk Perf 10 2d dull orange, significant damage at the top, GPO cds of AP9/73. Rated RRRRR: unrecorded unused. [The only date recorded by Don Pearce] The ultimate enigma: we have listed this stamp under 'Valuator of Runs' only because that was Ron Butler's final guess, and we need to put it somewhere! Frankly, none of the suggestions of MP Castle, Reverend PE Raynor and George Blockey are convincing. Only a couple of examples have been recorded - including in Rev Mursell's collection - and of themselves they offer no solution to the conundrum. No official statement on the subject has been found and, in the government's 1871 list of users of Departmentals, there was no candidate for 'VA'. That list also advised that any typesetting errors should be used-up as normal stamps. The situation is complicated by the absence of a stop after the 'V'. Certainly, this could have been an oversight on the part of the type-setter. However, 'V.A.' offers no more clarity than 'VA.' Could this be a case analogous to the mysterious 'I.E.'? Don Pearce believes 'I.E.' was a typsetting error for 'E.' Perhaps 'VA.' could be a typesetting error for 'V.' As with 'E.'+'I.E.', a setenant 'V.'+'VA.' multiple is needed to advance the argument. One thing that supports the error theory is that both 'I.E.' and 'VA.' are of extreme rarity. That could be the result of an error in each case on one position in the forme. In both cases such an aberration should have been quickly identified and rectified.
