'George Town' on rear in lieu of a postal marking and rated '1 N 9' above. Rear also with a "CHARLES/TOWN" bold seriffed h.s. and a London Bishop mark applied in transit. Front endorsed 'post payed to Charles Town' and rated '/4' just below. On arrival rated '1 N' then deleted and re-rated '1 N 6'. Murray at Reading, Pa). with "PHILA/DELPHIA" h.s. in red and "NEW YORK" h.s. and two Franklin marks of 5 & 6 Apr. also on rear. Endorsed 'To pay 6d' (inland charge) and 'I N 6'(d) on arrival. Carried on the Mercury ex NY that arrived at Falmouth on 20 May and with a London Bishop mark of 28 May also on the rear. "IND. AND PACT./POSTAGE" h.s. applied in NY on front. image LONG LETTER TO ENGLAND EX NY CARRIED PRIVATELY; c1825 lengthy EL (small repairs) ex NY to England with framed "SHIP LETTER/LIVERPOOL" h.s. on rear and rated '1/6'(d) on front. Contents (cross written and fully transcribed) inc. During the old revolutionary war between England and the Americans, West Point was a place of great importance in the possession of the Americans but was to have been treacherously given up to the British by an American officer of the name Arnold.....with a British major of the name Andre......[who] was taken by the Americans and sentenced to be hung as a spy but Arnold escaped to the British whom refused to give him in exchange.....his enemies pulled the cap over his eyes and was hung on an apple tree.....which never bore fruit or leaf afterwards....but is now a withered stump whilst a willow tree planted over his grave by an American lady to whom he was engaged grows luxuriously.....Washington's body-guard..... told me that Washington wept and said frequently he would give his right hand to be bale to save the young fellow.
