A significant rarity: believed to be the only recorded inland Soldier's Rate letter from the pre-stamp period. [Offered with a promissory note - rejoined (?) or repaired along central split - also signed by Meredith. Great Swanport on the NE coast, was renamed Swansea c.1863. George Meredith was granted land on Oyster Bay in 1821]

1855 (Oct 4) stampless mercantile entire to Launceston rated "6" in red with 'LONDON/OC4/1855/=PAID=' cds & inspectors '+'-in-circle h/s both in red, superb ' L /OC5/ A ' lozenge of Liverpool, 'SHIP-LETTER- INWARDS-FREE/31DE31/1855' arrival b/s in red, horizontal filing fold otherwise very fine. Ex Alan Robertson, Howard Longden - sold in 2001 for £1150 - and Robin Gwynn. Carried per 'Schomberg' ex Liverpool 6.10.1855, on her maiden voyage. On the night of 27.12.1855, she ran aground off Cape Otway (Victoria) and was completely wrecked.
Despite this being an extremely remote and uninhabited region of South-Western Victoria, the passengers & mail were transferred to the 'Queen', which must have been very close at hand, and arrived in Melbourne the next day! At pages 63-64, Brian Peace lists five covers, of which this is #3, and the only one to Tasmania. We have recorded a further two covers, one each to South Australia and Tasmania.
1858 (Sep 17) inland cover to "Mr Dixon/Browns River" with scarce franking of 'TASMANIA' Imperf 6d dull lilac SG 40 (Cat £90 x5+ on cover) with full margins tied by very fine BN '48' of Hobart with part-'PRE PAID' d/s in red at the base. From 1.3.1858, the inland rate was 6d per ½oz. [BN '48' was originally allocated to Ouse (1), then to The Cascades, which closed 30.6.1856. The Handbook Part 2 states the ERD for usage at Hobart was 29.9.1858: this is two weeks earlier. Browns River is 12km S of Hobart. The post office was always called "Kingston"]
1863 (Dec 7) part-entire to "Captain WD Van Wyke/American Barque James Allen" at Sydney with unusually fine franking of 'TASMANIA' Imperf 6d grey-violet SG 46 x2 (the first with full margins, the other just touched at top & right but with a fragment of the adjoining unit below; Cat £170 x5+ on cover) tied by very fine bars cancels of Hobart with 35mm GPO cds in red below, 'SHIP-LETTER/DE15/1863/=SYDNEY=' arrival b/s, stained on the reverse & some internal faults but of very fine facial appearance.
1864 (Apr 28) cover to "Pendleton/Patanpulai [?]/Kandy Ceylon" endorsed "Per RMS Bombay" with a very fine 'TASMANIA' 6d grey-violet SG 46 - lifted & replaced a little out of alignment - just tied by bars cancel of Hobart with 35mm GPO cds in red at L/L, 'GALLE/MY--/64/UNPAID' transit b/s & mss "1d" presumably the fee for an inwards shipletter, minor blemishes. A very scarce destination from Tasmania. Ex Wingfield (1961). [Pendleton Tea Estate in the Kandy Highlands was one of the earliest tea plantations in Ceylon. It was situated east of Kandy, not to be confused with Pendleton Lower & Upper that are both north of Kandy. The first tea plantation in Ceylon was established in 1867, at Loolecondera. It is likely that Pendleton was originally a coffee property that moved to tea after the coffee crop was ravaged by disease from 1869]
1870 cover to "Rosetta/Launceston" with postmaster's private handstamp 'SOMERSET/RIVER CAM/("10 2 70")' & boxed 'PRE-PAID/12FE12/1870' b/s, Perf 12½ 4d bright blue SG 86 cancelled with BN '52' of Launceston, overall light soiling & repaired tear across the flap. [Another cover dated "14 12 69" from the same correspondence was also cancelled on arrival]
1875 (Sep 4) blue cover to Shropshire with very fine 6d reddish mauve SG 76 horizontal pair (perfs at right slightly trimmed; Cat £84+ x3+ on cover) tied by very fine 'HOBART TOWN - TASMANIA' duplex, 'BRIDGENORTH/NO3/75' arrival b/s, minor wrinkling & a couple of minor flap repairs. Ex Gene Tinsley. [The stamps gauge Perf 12½. However, the only Perf 12½ issue was in Launceston 1864-68. Presumably, they fall under the Perf 12 issue at Hobart]
1878 (June 26) cover with Tasmanian Club embossing in red on the flap, to Oxfordshire "Per Chimboraza" [sic] with very fine Perf 12 6d slate-violet SG 75 tied by very fine 'HOBART TOWN - TASMANIA' duplex, 'PLYMOUTH/AU10/78/SHIP-LETTER' & 'OXFORD' transits & part-'CHIPPING NORTON' arrival b/s. Ex Gene Tinsley.
1900 pair of philatelic covers to "Dalmatia (Austria)" with De La Rue Pictorials ½d to 6d tied by Hobart cds, each with chamfered-boxed 'REGISTERED/[number]/HOBART' cachet in blue, 'DUBROVNIK/RAGUSA' arrival b/s. Ex Gene Tinsley. Very pretty.

1863-71 Experimental Separations Pin Perf 13½-14½ 6d grey-violet SG 116 horizontal pair with perforations at the base only and otherwise Imperforate and cut from the sheet clear of the design, vertical crease between just impinges on the left-hand unit & a little stained from the gum, just tied to a small piece by two very fine strikes of the Second Allocation BN '87' of Table Cape (renamed Wynyard on 1.1.1882), Cat £5000+. Extremely rare. Ex Gary Diffen. RPSofV Certificate (2013) states "...pin perf 13½ at base and imperf between...is genuine" then, peculiarly, "the Committee has no basis on which to comment on the three sides imperforate".
POSTAL FISCALS: 1880 Stamp Duty Platypus imperforate undenominated plate proof singles on gummed watermarked paper in the colours of the four issued stamps, margins good to huge, lightly mounted large-part o.g. Gorgeous!
