1711-1825 Netherlands East India Company (VOC; Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) Embossed Revenue Stamps commencing with 1711 Type 'C/24/VOC/St' [Stuiver] impressed on piece signed by notary H Cloete, various examples of 1714 '6 St' '12 St' '24 St' & '48 St' values plus '1½ RD' [Rix Dollar] (one of three known examples) '2 RD' & '3 RD' on pieces and complete receipts most with signatures alongside including De Chavonne (Governor) & C Bird (Colonial Secretary) plus six large-format documents with impressed values comprising 1714, 1717 & 1727 Land Grants with '24 St', 1719 Transport Contract with '24 St', 1737 Transfer of Land with '6 St' & 1750 Transfer with '48 St', then 1750 Type values including '6 RD' (one of two known), '10 RD' x2 (three known) including in combination with '8 RD', '12 RD' x2 (four known), '20 RD' (four known), '25 RD' (two known), '50 RD' (three known; one in the Cape Archives) & '60 RD' (three known), 1791 Type '6 St' on 1802 receipt, 1790 '36 St' on Land Grant and '6 RD' on 1799 receipt used during the First British Occupation, plus documents x18 with various values used during the Second British Occupation from 1806 and after the Cape was ceded to the British Crown in 1814 up to the use of COGH-inscribed Embossed Duty Stamps from 1825, also some additional pieces & duplicates, condition generally fine to very fine. With additional notes & photocopies documenting these fascinating issues.

1825 Somerset House Embossed inscribed 'CAPE OF GOOD HOPE' proof impressions x27 on a single sheet (320x195mm; watermarked 'SLADE 1824') from 3d to £50 including the values of £25 £30 £35 £40 & £45 which are stated to be unrecorded used on documents, a couple of contemporary pencil endorsements giving conversions to Stuiver & Rix Dollars, central folds, a few small edge faults & a some light aging marks. A remarkable item that apparently survived because it was used as a checklist in the Registrar's office.

1825 Somerset House Embossed inscribed 'CAPE OF GOOD HOPE' commencing with 1825 (June 15) Land Purchase receipt for 1000 Rix Dollars with impressed 9d being the earliest known usage of a Cape Colony revenue plus four combination frankings/mixed usages of VOC & COGH Revenues, 1828 Mortgage of Slaves with 3d & 2/- values, 1836 Quitrent Receipt with 6/- & 18d values plus another with impressed 3/- & 18d values plus a 3/- 'wafer' affixed, 1849 Deed of Burghership with impressed 15/- £3 & £15 signed by Sir Henry George Wakelyn Smith (Governor) with the Seal of the Colony impressed at L/R, 1853 Quitrent Receipt with impressed 30/- value and 6/- value 'wafer' affixed then folded into an entire and posted to Cape Town endorsed "Paid" rated "8d' in red, 1863 Deed of Transfer with £2 & 5/-, also many additional documents & duplicates, plus three Land Grants (one signed by Sir Rufane Shawe Donkin as Acting Governor) and two Government Notices regarding revenue collection as well as a British report of papers related to slaves, condition generally fine to very fine.

1827-30 Newspaper Duty 'CAPE OF GOOD HOPE/[crown & floral ornament]/ONE/HALF PENNY' impressed in red at U/R on 'SUPPLEMENT TO THE GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, Friday 21st December 1827' along with the complete Government Gazette of that day with the '.../ONE/PENNY' Impressed Duty in red at U/R, plus three further complete Government Gazettes each with '.../ONE/PENNY' Impressed Duty, some aging marks and/or minor edge faults. Interesting contents include shipping intelligence, market prices & annoucements of the sale of property including slaves. The rate was 1d per sheet & ½d per half-sheet.

1861 Life Insurance ½d rose/buff imperforate Barefoot 12 group comprising mint singles x2 (one a lower marginal example) plus a pair with full margins, also used single, pair & block of 10 (stated to be the largest multiple known) plus a cut-to-shape single pasted over a De La Rue 1d lilac pair pen-cancelled "£500", condition a little variable but most are fine to very fine.

1864-65 De La Rue Embossed commencing with the 1864 1d to £10 'set' Barefoot 1-11 (ex £5; the £10 cut-to-shape) plus extra shades, plate & printing varieties, early dates (one 1863 usage; date error?) and multiples including 1d blocks of 6 x2 & block of 12, 6d block of 8 (one unit damaged) and 9d 12d & 3/- pairs, also usages on documents noted Powers of Attorney x2 one with 12d x3 the other with two singles (one added when a substitution was made), plus 1865 Hand-Stamped values impressed on pieces & documents noted Insurance Company Licence with 2/- 5/- £4 £5 £30 x2 and £100 (stated to be unrecorded), £1 on Letters of Administration x2, £5 on Butcher's Licence, £50 on piece, Cheques x3, etc, also extras & duplicates, condition variable but many are fine to very fine.

1865 Cape Triangles used as Revenues 6d lilac pair & single (margins good to touching) affixed on the face of a very fine Midland Fire Assurance and Trust Company, Graaf-Reinert document (large piece) tied by pen cancels paying the duty on the sum insured of £250, also 1867 Cheque with Hope 6d violet tied by Standard Bank, Middelburg h/s and 1d red singles affixed to 1867 Cheque and 1894 Road Rates Receipt, the last with a few faults.
