image POSTAL HISTORY: 1942 (Dec) stampless cover endorsed "By safe hand/By Air/JStanleySmith/Major" addressed to "Lt General EF Herring/Head Quarters/New Guinea Forces" with very fine strike of the rare 'ARMY/NG 11XII42 F/SIGNALS' cds on the face, a couple of repaired opening tears & minor soiling. An exceptional Kokoda Track Campaign cover, the likes of which we have not previously seen. Consigned by the family of Lt-General Sir Edmund Herring, later Chief Justice and Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria. Herring was an important & highly decorated commander who saw service in World War II in the Western Desert, the disastrous Greece Campaign and Papua where he had an important role in counter-attacks against the Japanese in New Guinea. He was knighted for his role in the Kokoda Trail Campaign.
