image POSTAL HISTORY: 1846 (March 30) inwards stampless envelope from Great Britain addressed to "Post Office. Wellington" endorsed "Paid" with 'LEAMINGTON/MR30/1846' unframed cds rated "P 2/-", London 'PAID' tombstone d/s in red alongside, largely fine 'NEW-ZEALAND/SP 3/1846' transit of Auckland on face where rated "8"[d] payable by receiver, 'WELLINGTON/[crown]/SE*13/1846/NEW ZEALAND' oval arrival alongside, partly-repaired edge faults & wax seal excised from back. Ex Dr Tony Orchard. Carried by Toulmin Brothers packet service on the 'Waverley' departing 24.4.1846 via Cape of Good Hope arriving at Sydney 11.8.1846, where forwarded to New Zealand in sealed bag without NSW postal markings. The double 1/- per ½oz packet letter rate was paid by the sender; the receiver was charged double the 4d per ½oz New Zealand inland delivery fee.
