Overprinted 'L.T.'
Sale No: 247
Lot No: 412
Symbol: F

image RED OVERPRINT: 'L.T.' on Rouletted 2d bright vermilion, rouletting on all sides and cut from the sheet to preserve the design at left & the base, GPO cds of MY22/68. Rated RR: unrecorded unused. [Date range 22.5.1868 to 5.10.1868]

image RED OVERPRINT: 'L.T ' (with Stop Omitted after 'T ') on Rouletted 2d bright vermilion, rouletting on all sides, GPO cds of MY28/69. Rated RR: unrecorded unused. Superb. [Date range 7.4.1868 to 28.5.1869. The overlapping dates with the normal overprint & with both being rated RR suggests that both sub-types were printed in similar numbers, perhaps in alternating formes or a similar number of sheets? Unless a large block with both sub-types is found, this aspect may never be resolved]

image RED OVERPRINT: 'L.T ' (with Stop Omitted after 'T ') on Rouletted 2d bright vermilion vertical pair, rouletting on all sides and between, minor oxidisation, on small piece with very fine GPO cds of MR19/69. Rated RR+. A technically significant piece, adding weight to the suggestion that the No Stop stamps are from a separate forme or sheet. Colonel Harry Napier (III) had a similar pair.

image RED OVERPRINT: 'L.T ' (with Stop Omitted after 'T ') on Rouletted 2d bright vermilion, rouletting on all sides, blob of writing-ink at lower-left, tied to OHMS cover endorsed "Deed only/EA Heath" & with unusual 'L.T.O.' imprint at lower-left by GPO cds of DE4/68, light Kapunda arrival b/s of the same day, the cover with minor soiling & a small repaired tear at upper-right clear of the stamp. Number 1 of the four 'L.T' covers recorded in Anthony Pregrave's Census, and the only one with a Red Overprint. [The 'L.T.O.' imprint was probably quickly replaced because of the inevitable Telegraph Office connotations] William Hoare Benham practised law at Kapunda for more than 50 years. He married the daughter of his partner, James Huggins, & they had 11 children of which three of the four daughters achieved unusual successes: the botanist & educator Ellen Ida; and the artists Loui and Amie. In 1871, Huggins was bankrupted.
