In 1907 a newspaper announced that he planned to cross Africa in an automobile eventually arriving in Swakopmund in May 1909 , 630 days after setting off. In 1911 he again set off, this time initially on water with the expedition boat "Sarotti", later on the boat being carried on land. During this journey a wounded buffalo attacked Graetz and his photographer, killing the photographer and injuring Graetz who sustained a broken jaw amongst other injuries. Graetz was still recovering from his injuries when he mailed this envelope to Berlin. The expedition ended just before reaching the Congo River. He subsequently resumed this journey in 1912, via the Congo River. . With thanks to Derek Lambert. See the Rhodesia Study Circle Issue 284, March 2021(Image1)

Carmine-lake vertical strips of three, [14/24/34] and [77/87/97], [87] the "original" flaw, and a single [96] together with 1898-1908 Small Arms 5/- brown-orange and 10/- blue-green, all perfined "bsa/c", dated in manuscript and cancelled with "pass office/selukwe" oval datestamp on 1912 (30 Apr.) document, being a claim for "three head of cattle and five sheep". A unique document, being the only example of the "original flaw" known fiscally used and the only example which is part of a multiple. Remarkable. Photo Note: In the document the claimant states "The year that the white man entered the country, Dept came to my Kraal & said if I gave him cattle he would give me a wife. I gave him three head of cattle & 5 sheep and he went with them & he never gave me the wife promised"(Image1)
