image THE VERY RARE LONDON FOREIGN BRANCH "F.O" DOTTED CIRCLE ON COVER EX POLAND TO GUILDFORD; 7 July 1832 EL (written in Polish) sent Registered (endorsed "par Recepisse") from "Keydaniei" (= Kedainiai, now in Lithuania, but in Russian Poland in 1832) to "Guildford, Surrey" via Austria, with faint oval-framed "L....OL" namestamp on the front. There are also transit marks "Charge" & "L.A." (? Vienna) on the front beside "Autriche/Pr Huningue" (red oval, applied in Paris) with blue "CHARGE", and London "FPO" & General Post backstamps (26 July). Also on the front is a very fine rare large London Foreign Branch "F.O" in dotted circle (Jay L1049; only known 1826-32). This FO mark was only used on the tiny number of continental Registered letters that were addressed to places beyond London; all the recorded examples are to Edinburgh except for this one, which is specifically referred to by Jay (p.155). There are faint red crayon marks on the front as well, including a large "X" across the address (indicating that it was fully prepaid - except for British rates when posted); it was charged "4/2" on arrival, which appears to be the 2s-6d reg. fee + 1s-4d rate ex Austria via France + 4d London to Guildford. This is one of the rarest of all London Prestamp marks. [The Oct. 1827 example in Cavendish's 'Vivien Sussex' Collection, which had a partly erased address and toning, sold for £2,530 on 6 Mar. 2002.] Cross Reference: LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, LITHUANIA, POLAND, REGISTERED MAIL (Image)

image 1832/38 MONEY LETTERS & 1785/1839 LETTERS REGARDING SENDING OF 'HALF NOTES': 1832 EL to Newark charged 1/6 and marked 'Money Letter' and "BAWTRY/[two bars]" on the back, referring to £22/10/0 enclosed; 1836 EL to The Bishop of Salisbury in Southampton, redirected to Salisbury, charged 4d and marked 'Money Letter' with v fine FARRINGDON [Hampshire] udc on the back, apparently enclosing £1 coin which has caused a roughly circular tear in the letter!; 1785 EL (folded to display the contents) to Kent with London Bishop mark "29/NO" enclosing 'the other half of the bank note', not detected by the PO and carried at the single rate; and 1839 free letter London to Hailsham signed 'A Stuart' at lower left but with correspondence inside from a Mr Kennett (misuse of the franking system), asking for payment of overdue amount and suggesting the sending of 'half notes [ie, cut in half] in two letters', unusual content. Fine quartet. (4) Cross Reference: HAMPSHIRE, YORKSHIRE, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, FREE MAIL (Image)

image RARE 1840 "MONEY LETTER" ENDORSED "HALF A SOVEREIGN INCLOSED"; Remarkable 30 Jan. 1840 EL from Wolverhampton (fine c.d.s. and red U.P.P. handstruck "1" mark on the front) to London boldly endorsed "Money Letter. Half a Sovereign inclosed." above the address, and still with some threads inside where the coin was sewn onto the page of the letter! Very rare; there was no Money Letter system in operation from 1st Jan. 1840 , and the Registered inland mail system did not begin until 6th Jan. 1841, so this letter actually had no special treatment, but it is clear that it did indeed reach its destination. The coin was to pay for a copy of a specific will held in London. Amazing! image PAIR OF 4-MARGIN 1d RED COVERS REGISTERED (IN CASH) SHOWING REDUCTION OF 1/- TO 6d FEE; Good pair of 15 Nov. 1845/6 Apr. 1848 ELs registered from London (to Tiverton or Scotland) each with 4-margin 1d Red (just tied or well tied by London Numerals respectively); the first endorsed "Registered 1/-" in red, and the other with red ms "6", thus showing the reduction of the registration fee from 1/- to 6d that occurred on 28 Mar. 1848, a very early example of the new 6d rate. They originally enclosed a share certificate and a £99 "Bank Post Bill". It is very hard to find these cash-paid fee covers with 4-margin 1d Reds.
