POSTAL HISTORY: 1907 cover to France with Universal 1d tied 'KIRIKIRIROA' cds underpaying 2½d foreign letter rate and taxed with circular 'T/15/CENTIMES' cachet, on arrival French Postage Dues 10c & 20c affixed but crossed-through with manuscript pen "X" when undeliverable, opened and resealed with plain labels tied 'BIARRITZ' cds (also tying Dues) and 'INCONNU A L'APPEL/LE FACTEUR-CHEF LAFOURCADE' cachet applied on back, returned with 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/3 JL/07/N.Z' b/s in red, a few blemishes.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1909 Brodrick & Co, Wellington envelope to Germany posted directly onto ship with 1898 Pictorials ½d and Universal 1d x3 tied boxed 'PAQUEBOT' cachet x2 (Hosking #1500) applied at Sydney with 'MR30/09' cds alongside paying 2½d foreign letter rate plus 1d late fee.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1933 cover to Denmark with KGV Admiral 1d tied 'MANUNUI/19MY33/N.Z.' cds underpaying 2½d foreign letter rate, taxed locally with manuscript "TAX 3d" and at exchange office with circular 'T/30/CENTIMES' cachet, on arrival Danish Postage Dues 10o brown x3 affixed tied 'FREDERICIA/-4.7.33' cds, minor blemishes and a little roughly opened at right. [Manunui PO 7.5.1906; closed 5.2.1988. Timber & Sawmilling]
POSTAL HISTORY: 1937 airmail cover to USA endorsed "via Clipper Airmail from Honolulu" with Airmails 1d x2 and 6d x3 tied 'ROXBURGH/12AP37/NZ' cds for carriage by ship to Hawaii and onwards by PanAm FAM-14 Trans-Pacific Clipper service, a couple of very minor blemishes. [The PanAm FAM-19 Clipper service to New Zealand did not commence until July 1940]
POSTAL HISTORY: 1945 formular 'NZ AIR MAIL/LETTER CARD' sent to ex-POW "Sapper DR Dawson, c/o High Commissioner for New Zealand, The Strand, London" endorsed "Hold for Repriation" [sic] with Pictorials 6d Harvester solo franking tied by poor 'KARONI/5MY45/N.Z' cds, 'NEW ZEALAND ARMY BASE PO-U.K./23MY/45' arrival b/s where endorsed "Engrs/POW" in red ink on face, light horizontal fold. Enclosed letter dated 4.5.1945 includes "Events have moved fast the past week, so we should get word of you soon"; Hitler had committed suicide on 30.4.1945 and various German forces had surrendered in early May, but the official Instrument of Surrender was not signed until 7.5.1945.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1951 (Feb 16) commercial double-rate airmail cover to New York with KGVI 2/- pair + Canterbury Centennial 2d tied by 'WELLINGTON/LATE FEE' cds, minor blemishes.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1954 formular 'AIR LETTER FORM' to England with 8d Coronation tied Palmerston North '11MAR/1954' slogan cancel, fine boxed 'SALVAGED MAIL/AIRCRAFT CRASH/SINGAPORE 13.3.1954' h/s in red, charred at the edges. Scarce on an Aerogramme. [Carried on the ill-fated BOAC Constellation which crashed into a seawall attempting to land at Kallang Airport on 13.3.1954 and caught fire: 33 of the 40 passengers and crew were killed]
POSTAL HISTORY: 1955 airmail to USA with rare franking of QEII 3d red complete booklet pane of 6 (characteristic trimmed perfs at right) tied by'HIGH STREET/N.Z/-8JL44/CHRISTCHURCH' cds paying 1/6d rate, sealed on back with 'SARGOOD/& EWEN' 'sticky' tape.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1966 OHMS parcel label endorsed "Insured for ... £328-6-9" franked with Pictorials 1d Karaka Flower pair, 3d Kowhai Flower, 1/- Timber Industry pair and 10/- Tasman Glacier Skiing tied 'PALMERSTON NORTH/9MR66/ REGISTERED' cds, couple of very minor blemishes.
PICTURE POSTCARDS: Small box with 50+ from Dunedin including streetscapes with signage & 'A Balloon View of Dunedin', transport, churches & other buildings, local beaches, advertising card for 'GRAND HOTEL: DUNEDIN/JOSEPH A AINGER, PROPRIETOR', etc; also colourful Christchurch Exhibition multi-view, Hanmer Springs x5, Christchurch advertising cards for 'THE WHITE HART HOTEL...' and 'WARNER'S HOTEL...', and 1905 'VIEW OF THE SPA, TAUPO...' illustrated on both sides, 1906 Canterbury Times Antarctic Series 'Gun Cotton Explosion", 1906-10 portraits of Chief Justice Stout and Minister for Railways Ward, mourning cards for the late Prime Minister Seddon x3 and prohibitionist and Mayor of Christchurch TE Taylor, most are fine to very fine.
