THE JOHN DOYLE "HB" BROADSHEET MULREADY CARICATURE - imprint dated 26 May 1840 large "HB Sketches No.639" (420x295mm on heavy paper. Edge tears, inc. at foot that just affects the outer frame; foxing), published by "Thos. McLean" and drawn by John Doyle (signed by him "HB"), being a political satire of Lord Palmerston (as Britannia!) in the "FOREIGN OFFICE" sending "WAR" to the Orient (c.f. the 1st Opium War in China at this date), etc. Daniel O'Connell & the Duke of Wellington are depicted cheering, while Lord Monteagle & Sir. T. Baring worry! There is even a printed address; "To Mr. John Bull, &c, &c." Largely being sarcastic commentary on the Govt. using a £272,000 PO deficit as an excuse to raise a new £2M tax. Very scarce; Cavendish has sold previous examples for £690 or £500 inc. prem. (Image)
