image DURHAM/NORTHUMBERLAND - '1715 REBELLION' - ORIGINAL ORDERS TO "SEIZE THE PERSONS & ARMS OF ALL PAPISTS..."; Remarkable 1st Oct. 1715 EL (address-panel pasted to the reverse of the letter) from "Lumley Castle" (Chester-le-Street) sent "To The Deputy Lieutenants and Justices of the Peace of the County of Northumberland" (and presumably sent by special messenger; i.e. free in a way), signed by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster "[Earl] Scarborough" instructing the addressees on "His Majesty's express Commands, to give the necessary directions to the proper Officers of the Militia forthwith to seize, with the assistance of a Constable, the persons and Arms of all Papists..." etc. This was due to the outbreak of the '1715 Rebellion' in nearby Scotland the previous month. [The inner sides of the double sheet have subsequently - c.1750? - been used for a brief biography of the Earl of Scarborough.] Important historical item associated with the start of the first Jacobite Rebellion. Rare. Sold for £400 in our Jan. 2010 sale. Cross Reference: SCOTLAND, DURHAM, NORTHUMBERLAND, CIVIL WAR (Image)
