image EXCEPTIONALLY EARLY LETTER FROM LONDON TO VENICE WITH CLEAR MERCHANT'S 'GUILD MARK'; Remarkable 6 Sep. 1458 EL (light staining; possibly vinegar disinfection) from 'londra' [London] (clear filing note) addressed to 'Giovanni y Angelo Baldesi In Venezia' with the sender's clear "a/o" Merchant's Mark on the front. Possibly the 2nd earliest [one known five months prior from this correspondence] example of British foreign mail. Excellent 'Page One' item for any G.B. Postal History Collection. Outstanding Exhibit item demonstrating the origins of commercial mail exchange in Europe. Note: The overwhelming majority of 15th century Venetian merchant mail originates elsewhere in the Italian States and mail from London is very rare before 1500.
