Fourteen Mile Plain: 'FOURTEEN MILE PLAIN/29AU24/VIC' (LRD; TO period) largely fine strike on KGV 2d scarlet. Rated RRRR. PO 7.11.1921; RO 27.3.1922; TO -.4.1923; closed 31.3.1924. [23km WSW of Swan Hill]
This strike dated after the official closing date raises two questions: are we dealing with a simple date error or did the business extend beyond the official closure? The use of a 2d stamp may be seen to suggest a date error as the letter rate had decreased to 1½d from 1.10.1923. However, it may be just as likely that whatever stamps were to hand were used, or indeed that supplies of the new 1½d stamps had not been sent to this tiny office. A conundrum!
