image BLACK OVERPRINT: 'G.P.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Rouletted 2d deep red-orange, rouletting on three sides & cut from the sheet just into the design at left, tied to OHMS cover with 'Government Printing Office/Adelaide ("29.12.1871")' imprint at L/L by GPO cds of JA2/72, to "Oulnina NE/Kooringa" with 'KOORINGA/JA3/72/S.A' arrival b/s, forwarded "c/o Levi & Co/Adelaide" with very fine 'P - O/ 2 /JA4/72/RAILWAY' b/s (Type UFM; rated RR) & further endorsed "Criterion Hotel" in blue, light overall soiling. The stamp is rated RRRR, making this one of the rarest Departmental frankings. Number 1 in Anthony Presgrave's Census of only three 'G.P.' covers, and illustrated by Ron Butler at page 93. Philip Levi arrived at Adelaide in 1838 from England. He was a prominent businessmen with extensive land holdings in the Far North. Oulnina was one of the properties his company, Levi & Co, disposed of in 1870. In 1863, he had been a founder of the Adelaide Club. Levi's home Vale House was gifted to the Town of Walkerville in 1948. His Wikipedia entry states, with straight-faced irony, "He is remembered by Levi Caravan Park". Kirby's Criterion Hotel was established in 1857 as the Family Hotel at 137 King William Street, & was renamed the Criterion in 1867. It was demolished in 2010.
