NEW HEBRIDES - POSTAL HISTORY: Fijian PPC 'Samoan Maidens, Fiji' headed "Nov 27th 1913/Oceanic Rubber Coy Ltd/Pt Patterson/Banks Group", to Sydney with 10c Arms tied by 'PORT-VILA/10/DEC/13/NLLE HEBRIDES', minor corner bend. A remarkable origin: the Banks Group are the islands north of Santo, the two weeks transit to Vila indicating how remote they were. [Neither the Oceanic Rubber Co nor Port (or Point?) Patterson (or Paterson?) was found by Google search]

Drying split [cocoa] nuts for copra' (a wonderful photograph), '...The police headquarters' with two young boys apprehended for under-age driving, '...Commercial wharf at Papeete' with Mariposa Café and Société Commerciale de l'Oceanie building, '...Mail day on the wharf' with hundreds of the locals attired in their Dimanche finery, '...Double canoe race' with two enormous canoes that would fit right in with a Chinese dragon boat race, '...Inamongst [sic] the vanilla' showing four girls draping themselves with vanilla tendrils to the amusement of the Banana Man, etc, six of them subtly hand-tinted, fine to very fine unused. A most attractive series.

POLYNESIA - PICTURE POSTCARDS: 1914 L Gauthier (Papeete) wallet headed 'Vue panoramique du/bombardement de Papeete/le 22 Sept 1914' with a 5½-panel panorama of the devastation caused by the German warships 'Gneisenau' & 'Scharnhorst', the first panel with inset '.../THE GUNBOAT ZELEE BRINGING BACK THE WALKUR', unused. [The Germans sought to seize the coal stockpiled at Papeete but the French set the coal on fire. Prior to the attack on the town, the local gunboat 'Zélée' seized the German freighter 'Walkure', which was probably intended to take the coal stockpile. In the attack, both ships were destroyed. Apart from our French clients, was anybody aware of this incident!?]
