image 1904 (April): Registered envelope from Port Arthur to St. Petersburg, bearing 1889 14 kop. blue & rose-red on horizontally laid paper, tied by Port Arthur cds with matching registration label alongside. Reverse with St. Petersburg arrival cds (Apr. 31, 1904). An appealing item from the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War.rnNote: Port Arthur was a deep-water port and the Russian naval base at the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in Manchuria. In February 1904 it was attacked by Japanese forces which was the starting point of this war which was fought during 1904 and 1905 between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea.
