image 1849: Double rate Entire letter from St. Germain-en-Laye to Albano Rome bearing an exceptional horizontal pair of the Cêrès 1 fr. light-carmine, a multiple with fresh colour and large to enormous margins including parts of all possible six neighbouring stamps, tied by light Petits Chiffres '3094' numeral lozenge. Clear despatch cds (Jan 18, 1854) and Paris transit cds of the same day, both in black as well as framed PD in red alongside. The obverse shows the endorsement "Via Marseilles". A delightful cover for a second letter weight mailing between 7.5 and 15 gr., fully prepaid to the Papal States, applicable between 1853 and 1866. Signed Mondolfo and Calves Maury 6c = € 4'650.rnNote: Addressee of this marvellous cover is Hugh Charles Clifford, 7th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1790-1858), a British peer. On succeeding to his father's estates in 1831 he took his seat in the House of Lords. In his later years he lived chiefly in Italy, where he had a house near Tivoli.
