Rated RR: unrecorded unused. [Date range 6.6.1868 to 9.10.1868] Brighton's Grace Darling Hotel, named after the famed English heroine who rescued passengers from a sinking ship in 1838, was opened in 1849. However, by 1867, the hotel was under the control of the Destitute Board who ran an industrial school for children there.

image BLACK OVERPRINT: 'D.B.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Wmk Perf 10 2d dull orange, tied by GPO cds of JY--/71 to plain cover endorsed "Inmates letter" & addressed to ".../care of Mr Scott/...the Yatla [sic]/Hard Labour Prison/Dry Creek", two opening tears across the flap, pinholes & filled punch-hole at L/L from where affixed to an official file. The stamp is rated R. The only 'D.B.' cover in Anthony Presgrave's Census. An oustanding postal history usage from an asylum inmate to a prisoner sentenced to hard labour. Edward Bate Scott arrived at Adelaide in 1839. He accompanied Edward John Eyre on two expeditions, in 1839 and 1840. In 1867, Scott was appointed Acting Protector of Aborigines. Between 1869 & 1892, he was Superintendent of the Dry Creek Labour Prison, at Yatala, where he would have used 'C.D.' overprints.
