image BLACK OVERPRINT: 'C.O.' on Rouletted 2/- dull carmine block of 4, a couple of ironed-out creases, some judicious hinge-reinforcing, a bit stained from the characteristic (brown) o.g., that has been removed. Rated RR+. A rare multiple. Ex Colonel Harry Napier (II). Illustrated by Ron Butler at page 54, where he states that "...some time before 1900, an Adelaide dealer purchased a part-sheet which had been crumpled to a ball". The 'crumpling' was perhaps exaggerated but it seems clear that storage had been far-from-ideal.

image BLACK OVERPRINT: 'C.O.' on Rouletted 2/- dull carmine, rouletting on all sides, a bit stained from the characteristic (brown) o.g. that has been removed, GPO cds of DE14/68. Rated RRR. Ex Colonel Harry Napier (?). Illustrated by Ron Butler at page 54, where he states that the existence of this stamp "emphasises that this denomination was not overprinted in red". In fact, not only were there no Red Overprints on the 2/-, there was only one instance of a Blue Overprint, on the 'G.P.' 2/-. As noted, this used stamp also shows the effect of aged brown gum so it may be that all the sheets from this printing were similarly affected before being overprinted. [Date range 14.12.1868 to 31.3.1890, a very late out-of-period usage: see the next lot]

Rated RRR. [Date range 14.12.1868 to 31.3.1890, an extraordinary & very late out-of-period usage that is the latest recorded usage for any Departmental.
