1894, a letter cancelled in blue with SAVE FROM THE WRECK OF THE AIRARAPA, a british steamer from the MACKINTOSH LINE was on its rout from SYDNEY to AUCKLAND and was totally wrecked at GREAT BARRIER ISLAND on the 1st of November 1894, the captain and 78 crew members or passengers were saved, the wreck was sold on the 6th November for GBP 70 and the cargo for GBP 160, the mail was subsequently salvaged, letters from England are very rare, this catastrophe was the reason why the idea of the PIOGEON POST came up, very attractive and desirable, XF!
