1888 (Nov 13): Essay for proposed 1 s. value, prepared by De La Rue, an imperforate example printed in bright rose-red, with large margins all round, backed on to piece from the De La Rue record books and signed off in margin in red ink and dated on reverse '20/10/88'. Rare, illustrated in "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 6505, the carmine colour clashed with the 1 d. value and whilst the Islands had requested yellow for the 1 s. duty, brown was eventually chosen.
