image POSTAL CARDS: 1917 South Australia 1896 (circa) 1d(+1d) outward-half 'WITH REPLY CARD' Barred-Out ACSC P37 with printed advice for Commonwealth Club of Adelaide, to the Supreme Court with Adelaide machine cancel of 27JUL17, the faintest of bends still superb, Cat $7500. One of the great Postal Stationery rarities of both South Australia & the Commonwealth of Australia. The ACSC states that only three examples have been recorded, of which this is the latest. [Note that the example stated to have been used 23.6.1917 was actually used 28.6.1917: it was sold at our auction of 14.11.2014 for $8737. No example has been recorded of the obliterated reply-half ACSC P38] The addressee, Sir George John Robert Murray, was Chief Justice and Lieutenant-Governor of South Australia, and Chancellor of the University of Adelaide. He is best-known philatelically for his fine collection of South Australian Departmental Overprints that, regrettably, he donated to the Public Library Museum & Art Gallery of South Australia. The printed notice is for a lucheon to honour the English actor, Cyril Francis Maude, who was touring with the play 'Grumpy', in which he had the leading role.
