1845 Baltimore, Maryland, 5c red on manila entire envelope, with clear strikes of signature, provisional handstamps "Paid" and "5" in oval, blue "Baltimore Md. May 5" (1846) cds alongside at left, cover addressed to Miss Susan Julia Mayer, care of Geo. M. Keim at Reading Pa., faint stains as often, still v.f., with 1980 PFC. A rare Baltimore "5 Cent" Provisional, one of only nine recorded in red (in the unpublished 1996 Don Shearer census, which lists nine 5c envelopes struck in red ink, dated from March to May 1846. While the quality of the red strikes is generally weak, the envelope offered here has relatively clear strikes. 1847 10c black, unused with disturbed original gum, full to large margins all around, sharp impression, a rare sound unused example in exceptional condition, with 2017 PFC and 2018 PSE certificate, the latter graded "VF-XF 85", one of only three with this grade in the SMQ Population report, with only two graded higher. 1851 1c blue, type I, pos. 7R1E, black cancel, margins full at sides with parts of adjoining stamps, to just barely touching at upper and lower right, fresh color, with 2017 PSE certificate graded "VF 80", one of only two known in this grade (the published census compiled by Jerome S. Wagshal contains at least 98 unduplicated records of Scott No.5. There are probably no more than ten examples existing outside of the Wagshal census population, including the example offered in this auction.
